Exclusive: Melissa Wu, Gold Medal Interview

What goes through your mind when you climb the final set of steps and step cautiously out onto a platform 10 metres above the ground, surrounded by stands filled with thousands of passionate Australian fans and with multiple TV cameras directed straight at you?

When you walk to the end of the diving board and look down at the shimmering blue waters of a Commonwealth Games diving pool, thirteen years after your first games and with the knowledge that with this one final dive, you need to produce near perfection if you are to claim an individual Gold Medal?

That was the situation Melissa Wu found herself in at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, only a dive of 76.16 would take her up into the Gold Medal position and provide her with her first Individual Gold at the games.

A look of total focus was followed by a two-and-a-half somersault, and as she slid gracefully into the pool below, the arena erupted and her score of 76.80 thrust her to the top of the podium!

So how do you perform like that in the moment, how does it feel to wear the Gold Medal, what’s next on the schedule and how did you prepare yourself mentally and physically to become the Commonwealth Champion?

Those are just some of the questions that we put to Melissa in our exclusive Gold Medal Interview, on her triumphant return to Precision Athletica last week. Watch our two part talk to hear Melissa’s responses, along with her advice to aspiring young athletes and her personal message to you, her fellow Athletica athletes.
